Not sure if it came from the Germans or the Czechs but grandma was from Bohemia and fried bread was traditional as are kolachen ( several different spellings ) which are fried pieces of dough with a filling like apricot jam. Doughnuts are usually credited to Dutch sailors.

My German grandmother made crullers, which were fried dough. But many different cultures have their own version of fried dough.

I believe most cultures have this most simple of recipes. For dessert fried doughs, there are French beignets covered in sugar. The same thing for European Jews is called Hazenblozen...simple and sweet.
