There are so many ideas, it kind of depends on the crowd you anticipate. Food sells, such as baked goods for a bake sale or have a potluck and guests pay for a plate.
There are raffles. Ask local businesses for donations and have guests bid or buy tickets. Do a 50/50 raffle where the winner gets 50% of the cash and the rest goes to your friend.
A really great way to get money is to have a poker tournament where all or most of the pot goes to your friend.
Have a change bucket at the door to have guests empty their pockets.
The idea is to have a lot of ways for people to contribute and still get something for their money (food, entertainment etc). Make sure party goers are well informed of the situation. Have pictures of your friend and maybe a poster etc.
Good luck!!

Any time alcohol is involve people tend to be a little more generous. Make it a spaghetti feed - cook all the pasta in advance and bag it up - you re-heat it by putting one batch at a time in a colander and dipping it in boiling water for 30 seconds. Silent auctions where people write their bid amount on a sheet of paper next to the item that has been donated. Auction off home made baked goods.
I once got a letter from a scout leader asking for a donation - no door prizes or auction items no time out of my day - just a donation. You know, sometimes it is worth $100 not to have to do anything. Good luck.

Depends on where you live, but we have always raised the most money having a big yard sale. Everyone donates unwanted items. Can make it a party atmosphere with a food table (also donated) and music. Could even see if local businesses would donate items or even their parking lot for the day. Amazing what people will buy. Good luck and prayers for your friend's recovery.

a silent auction
a live auction
get someone to donate a used car, gun or large tv for a raffle
At the benefit try to get some good music group to perform so lots of people attend. You can make money from the ensuing bakesale, dunking booth, raffles, auctions, etc. All you need is a good group of people to round up donations and encourage involvement from volunteers. My friends and I did something like this for our friend with MS last summer. We raised over $20,000. It was a lot for our small town to raise that much.

I would rent some harmless carnival games like the spinning wheel w/ dice on it and host a small casino night. The house always wins just keep the limits down. I think this is legal as long as its for charity, my church does it at least. Just have people donate money at the door and give them chips or something and when they leave cash in their chips or if you have recieved any donations have a value for those so they can buy them. That way you are winner either way and people will have fun doing it.

Our youth group just raise over $3000 with a garage sale. They asked everyone at church to donate anything they wanted to get rid of and we ended up with a gymnasium full of things to sell.
