I live in a very small community (so small you MUST go through the city office for everything, electric, water, trash) and I am wondering what is the best way to get the city to start a recycling program?

Do you live anywhere near a larger community that does recycle? Perhaps you could "piggyback" the operation on theirs...bring materials to a drop-point, etc.?

It is difficult to start such a program in a small community. It is expensive on a small scale. The best way is to start "at the grass roots level" is to start at home. The preference is to reduce or reuse before recycling.

Does the newspaper have a website? Do you need to get a newspaper every day? Can you get your local news in electronic form?

Can your local grocery store change to reusable containers for any of the products it carries? Can you take reusable cloth bags or boxes to the grocery store rather than using disposable plastic bags.

Think of conservation from this perspective ...

It is easier to NOT do something, or buy something use it once and throw it away, than it is to clean up the waste afterwards.

before you approach the city talk to others in your community and see if they are willing to participate...maybe hang some flyers and hold a small meeting..if you can show community interest it will go smoother if you approach the city...
better yet start one with volunteers and then encourage your city to incorporate it into their waste management program once you get it going...if they see it working they will be more likely to take it into consideration...

I'm sorry to tell you, you have to start it. Maybe others will come to help but only if they see you make money. The longer I live the less I expect from mankind.
