My mother is in serious condition and over the weekend her pulse rate was at 42 nobody seems to be able to give me an answer as to what this means or if this is a very low pulse rate? We know she is dying, so can anyone help me out with pulse rates, I'm not even sure how to take her pulse so that I can check it myself. Your help during this time is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

42 is a low heart rate, and can be caused by a number of things including medications, or heart failure.
To take a pulse, place your fore finger and middle finger on the inside of the wrist below the thumb, feel around until you can feel the blood pulsing thru the vein, now count the number of times it pulses in 15 seconds and multiply by four to get the heart rate. You have my empathy in the imminent loss of your mother.

You take the pulse on the thumb side of the wrist with your 2 fingers (NOT YOUR THUMB) just place your 2 fingers on the wrist until u can feel the pulse and time it for 60 seconds
