Sticks from a tree. Whittle a point on the end of each stick. Pour boiling water on the tip to sanitize the sticks.

When you are done, douse the sticks in a bucket of water so you don't start a fire. Put the sticks in the trash.

The problem with coat hangers and metal skewers is that they conduct heat and get very hot. You can get a serious burn. Bamboo skewers are too short. Soaked wooden skewers are ineffective after a few toasts and can start to burn.

You can buy dowels about 3' or 4' long at any crafts or home improvement store. They're pretty inexpensive, if you stick to the 3' long ones that are thinner so they'll actually go through a marshmallow without totally disemboweling it. Or, if you don't mind being a little closer to the fire, get the 4' long ones and snip them in half with a heavy twig snipper. Lightly sand the snipped ends so no one gets splinters.
