Tahini is used in making hummus, so isn't that middle eastern? I don't know what else it is used for.
My local Kroger grocery store has an international aisle, and they sell tahini there.

I live in East Texas but I've had the best luck at the Drug Emporium in their organic/health food section, strangely enough. If you have a Drug Emporium in your area try there and I bet they'll have it (mixed in the organic peanut butter area). Mine also has rennet free cheese, and all sorts of things I wasn't expecting.

I was going to sugest Wal Mart. Ours has it here in Ok. Same aisle as Chinese food. But then we have lots of middle easterners here because of OSU. You could make your own. Sesame seeds, garlic and maybe add a little sesame oil to smooth it out. Just grind it all together.
