School just got out recently and I want to have a bonfire with about 20 friends, it's my first real-type party (it'll be 14 to 18 year olds there). Any good ideas that are 'cool' and easy and don't include beer? For supplies I have a hot tub, a big yard, and a small budget...thank you

For your drinks the economical way to go would be with lemonade made from the powdered stuff and fruit punch kool-ade. We spend a lot of time on the beach with our kids and the neighbors. 5 gal. drink dispensers full of the drinks are much cheaper than trying to furnish sodas for a crowd of teenagers.

Are you allowed to have a bonfire where you are? I think making a ring, a bonfire, many chairs around to sit, some music If possible via satellite radio, so you can suit everyones taste as the party goes on), in ice chest full of water, gatoraide, iced tea, sodas, etc., a few unordinary snacks from Trader Joes or Costco to pass around. Thats what we always do camping, and everyone enjoys is to this day. If your group is into movies, and if you have access to a digital projector, you can show a movie or two outdoors as well.
Have fun & enjoy your Summer!

1) You need to create a fire pit or use a pre-made one. To creat a fire pit, dig a big hole away from any trees or anything else flammable. Make sure that the place that are you are making the bonfire allows bonfires, and that the people around are okay with it.

2) Stack wood in a log cabin fashion inside of the pit, building upwards. Make sure to space the wood out to leave a center.

3) Fill the center with wood chippings/ twigs/ newspaper. Only use dry leaves if you don't have anything else as they have a tendency to burn up quickly and be carried away in wind.

4) Use matches to light different points in the center.

5) Blow into center of the "log cabin" appropriately to get the fire to burn hotter.

6) Add additional kindling until center logs catch on fire and embers are created.

In my opinion, no bonfire is complete without S'mores. They work really well with chocolate coated cookies (such as digestives) and its less mess than the typical graham wafers and chocolate bars (and less expensive). Just roast marshmallows and put them between two cookies. For games, you can always play capture the flag, or Ultimate Frisbee.

Karaoke
other music
marshmallows and chocolate and graham crackers to make s'mores
blankets or towels to sit on around the fire
oh, and invite the neighbors so they can't complain about the noise, but call it quits by 10 or 11 PM anyway...

Buy hotdogs and hotdog forks so people can roast their own. Afterwords, people can use the forks to roast marshmallows for s'mores.
