I have this feeling my stereo is sucking up power. Its vent is warm (not hot, but warm) to the touch in stand-by mode.

No, since these are general consumer devices that are luxury items there would be no reason for them to do it.

You can check your usage with a Kill A Watt meter sold at various places like Amazon, etc...

I doubt that the U.S. government regulates energy consumption on an individual consumer basis. The U.S. government is too enslaved by the selfish whims of a materialistic electorate for the government to levy any stringent restrictions on home energy consumption.

The government doesn't care. But just remember, as long as anything is plugged in, it's using electricity. Yes it's a pain to unplug, but if something is easily within your reach unplug when not using. Thanks!
