Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus. Nearly 80% of the population gets cold sores. Just to be clear cold sores are not canker sores, the type of sores that occur on the inside of one's mouth. Cold sores are almost always caused by the HSV1 strain. Genital herpes are almost always caused by HSV2. However, HSV1 can cause genital herpes and HSV2 can cause oral herpes. Herpes is transferred via direct contact (i.e. kissing, oral sex, intercourse etc) and can be transmitted without and evidence of an outbreak (i.e. one can transmit the virus even if no signs are present).
A blood test can be given to determine whether one has antibodies for the herpes virus however I think most doctors are reluctant to give it without an explicit request given the rate of infection.
Further, to clarify some other information given in the answers, it would be inaccurate to call HSV2 in and of itself an STD as it could cause oral herpes. It would be more accurate to call genital herpes an STD because of the inherent sexual nature of the location of the infection.

I got clinically diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus (type 2) about four yrs ago, when I was still in college and had a mindless one-night stand. I understand a lot of people say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a mistake that one time and suddenly I felt like I was going to have to live with the implications for my entire life. The worst part was feeling I could never date guys again. In the end, who wants to go out with a girl who has sores round her "you know what" area? But since a friend shared this movie https://tr.im/v4kjM everything changed.
Not only was I able to clear away all remnants of the herpes simplex virus from my body in less than 21 days, but I was also able to start dating again. I even met the guy of my dreams and I'm so blessed to write that just a week ago, in front of everyone in a crowded restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!!! This method provided me the chance to be happy and experience true love again. Now I hope that I can help others by sharing this story.

It is scary about how all these people are saying the HSV1 which casues cold sores is not at STD. Although it can be transmitted through other acts such as kissing, the fact of the matter is that oral sex with someone who has a cold sore can lead to genital Herpes. HSV1 and HSV2 are very similar viruses. Check out the link below.

Cold sores are ALWAYS caused by the herpes virus, generally by hsv1 not hsv2 which normally causes genital herpes. However you can pass hsv1 to someone else's genitals by giving them oral sex when you have a sore or the virus is active. If you get cold sores you should avoid kissing from when you first get a tingle on your lip until a few days after the sore has healed.

Cold Sores are Herpes Simplex A, while genital herpes are Herpes Simplex B. Similar, but not the same, Simplex A is not an STD at all, i get cold sores once in awhile and i think i caught the virus from my mom because my mom had been getting them, you can get it through sharing a glass or chapstick. However both viruses will stay in your body for ever and should be treated when ulcers are present.

Cold sores are a type of herpes. They are not usually of the genital herpes variety but is you do oral sex on someone when you have a cold sore, you can transfer it to the genitals.

Cold sores are a Herpes virus BUT not the same herpes strain as the STD. Most people contract the cold sore herpes at some point in their lives by kissing, water fountain, etc. Cold sores are Herpes type 2 and STD herpes is Herpes type1...or it could be the other way around lol. But rest assured its not an STD
