Its normal, everyone does it. I work as an EMT and when I count respirations I never tell the patient I am counting because when they know I am counting they try to breath "normally", either too slow or too fast, whichever they think is more normal lol. Kind of funny really.

When you think about it you are overrideing your natural breathing. This is NOT a disease but a pshcyologial reaction.
It is actually funny when you think about it.... Go to the DR and have them listen to your lungs (for whatever reason) you will be told..
Take deep breaths.....
Breath normaly......
LOL
The last time I was at the Dr I asked him.... HOW do I breath normaly? He couldnt answer.
The truth is when you think about it, you are taking over. Picture it like the cruise control on a car, it is fine until you touch the gas, then you are overrideing the automatic feature. Breathing is the same, ....
Now the real question is, how many people started to think about their breathing after reading this question to see if it was true...lol

Because fortunately, the brain controls that for us, along with blinking and the beating of our hearts. The brain tells us to blink to prevent our eyes from becoming too dry, to breath and the heart to beat to basically live! By trying to control the natural breathing pattern, you're just disrupting what your brain is telling you to do. Just like if you try to hold your breath for a long time, your brain will send out signals that not enough oxygen is getting into your lungs, therefore you have to start breathing again to prevent passing out or possibly dying. It's called involuntary movements that the brain will do these things for us without having to think about it. It's like when your friend tells you to "think fast" as he throws you a baseball, the natural instinct would either to catch the ball, or move out of the way to prevent from getting hit.
But be grateful that this part of the brain does work for you! There's people who suffer from sleep apnia such as my father and sometimes myself, where we would stop breathing in the middle of the night! It's scary thing as my mom would have to wake my father up to remind him he wasn't breathing and the doctors had to monitor his heart because it would beat irregularly!

Breathing is an involuntary reflex action of the muscles.
You don have the ability to voluntarily override the involuntary action. When you do the normal breathing gives way to your voluntary breathing activity.

when you focus on any body function, you become much more aware of it and in tune with it. Hence, when you think about breathing you are really paying attention to it and that attention may make it seem as if you are "making" yourself breathe. make sense? :)

Like the others say, because you are thinking about it and becoming very aware of it. This happens to me a lot and it is very annoying. I try to redirect my attention--sometimes it lasts a long time and it's very annoying.
