Does anyone know the origins of this custom and why we continue it today?

I think its just because thats what the rich people used to eat.

But I'm getting married in September, and my wedding cake is good old basic sponge, just like teh birthday cakes.

I'm not a cheapskate - I just prefer it!

Fruit cake in days past was a sign of wealth and position. Most of the spices that were used in a fruit cake were very expensive and difficult to come by. Also, some of the fruits (citrus for example) were extremely rare in Europe and only the most wealthy people could afford to purchase them. The process to candy the fruits also was expensive since sugar was a highly prized commodity at the time. If you wanted to show off your status and impress guests then you would be sure to have fruit cake at your gathering. Often it was used to in royal courts, so therefore other nobleman would also try to have fruit cakes whenever they could to show their position. Fruit cake today is usually a symbol of holiday celebration that should remind us of prosperity and abundance. There are some really good ones out there (believe it or not) but there are plenty of bad ones as well.

it is a sign of abundance..during the old days having most of the ingrediants was something that only happened once in awhile..fruit was not plentiful or easy to get..so having one and giving it as a gift was a good thing
