The most preferred way and the most common way to diagnose someone with herpes is by having an outbreak. The doctor may also take a fluid sample from the sores.

If a person isn't on an outbreak at the time though, then there is a blood test that can be done to determine if a person has herpes.

There is NO urine test, like someone above mentioned.

Advisement "I am not a doctor and cannot diagnose". - A physician can test for herpes simplex virus by lab test. They can also make a general diagnosis by evaluating a current rash/outbreak. If you are concerned that you may have contracted herpes simplex virus (either on the face or genitally), it is recommended that you discuss this with a physician so that you are aware of your status and will avoid transmission to other persons during any outbreak stage. It's better to know than to not know. Good luck.
