A few things that you mentioned are worrysome. Dust/hay and smoke.

1 Dust and hay inhalation: This may cause serious problems in a person allergic to these substances. Over long term, it can cause serious lung problems that are irreversible. The disorder is called hypersentivity pneumonitis. Basically, its the body attacking the foreign substance inhaled over long periods of time and the lungs ending up fibrotic which is very bad. You might want to consider getting checked by your doctor. It might be related to your asthma. Also, wearing a mask might be helpful.
2Smoke: Breathing any kind of smoke is not healthy for you. Think of it like this. When you are in a smoke filled room, you might end up covered in smoke, which you could easily clean by washing up. You dont have this luxury when it comes to inhaled particles. It takes much longer for the body to eliminate these substances and chronic exposure is very dangerous. You should wear a mask and try to avoid it all together.

We had horses for 14 years, I was a horseshow photographer for about 20 years

If you are having problems wear a mask with all the dusty situ's I knew of a few horses that had a problem with the dust in the hay and had to be feed pellets ~ see not just humans

Every little bit of dust that enters your lungs does damage

Why are you doing what you are doing? Can you just not do it and let the horses eat the hay? If you have had asthma all of your life you are not healthy! If is because of a birth defect then you have a right to know how to take better care of yourself in this situation. But do not go out of your way to make matters worse for yourself. Any smoke inhalation is not good no matter what the source. The fact of the matter is is that you are trying to run the horses life let go and just let them eat!!!!

The smoke could definitely do damage! Often times in a building fire, the only reason victims will die is because of the overexposure of the smoke to the lungs.

Yes. Be careful. Look at those that went to help on 9/11. Many are sick from breathing the particles & smoke. They were just trying to help no one thought of them being injured years later.

God Bless

If you feel discomfort while maintaining the horses, see a doctor. I also clean horse stalls and I make sure to wear a breathing mask. Its just a personal precaution and the masks are cheap.

It's not good to have anything in your lungs, but I doubt you're doing them any really serious damage.

Wear a mask if it irritates you, it wouldn't be a terrible idea anyway.
