Honestly, if you are at dinner (home or out), going to a movie, sitting in a meeting, or anyplace where your attention should be elsewhere, shut the cell phone off. No matter how important you think you are, you aren't.

It is stupid. It's dumb for someone to think that they are important by being on a cellphone, or even that they are cool for having a cellphone. They look funny because cellphones have been so accessible for a decade or more. Actually, what's sad is when some people are controlled by technology that they don't notice it. What's even worse is when they're complaining about all these phone calls on their cellphones, yet they cannot simply turn off that small thing or put it away somewhere.

I very rarely talk on my cell phone -- and only close family members and friends have the number. I maybe receive 2 calls a week, so typically I'll leave my phone on. Reason being is that if someone does try to reach me by cell, its usually important or an emergency -- as I have asked those who have my cell number to try either my home or office phone first.

Of course, I can only think of one time my cell phone has gone off somewhere important -- and that was during a doc's appointment. When I did answer the call (immediately shut it off when it rang and then called person back after the appointment), it did turn out to be important. My cousin's car had broke down on the interstate and she was stranded.

The whole point of a cell phone, is to have a phone when your out of the house. According to you 50% of the time outside your home, the cell phone should be off.

Cells should ALWAYS be kept on, in case of emergencies. Mine is always on, but I leave it on vibrate so teachers dont take it away, and so it doesnt piss other people off when im out.

If your in a movie, you can still talk, just do it low, and keep it very very short, or just text them.

The only time mine is off, is if im in a hospital or old folks home, for obvious reasons.

90% of cell phone users think they're important and don't need to shut off the phone when they're out. I find it irritating while trying to eat out and some one at the table next to me has to answer the phone and talk so loud that the whole place can hear his/her side of the conversation.
I have a cell phone and when I go out, I turn it off. If the call is that important, they'll call back or leave a message.

I totally agree... I've had to ask a houseguest to take his calls elsewhere... Sooo... We invited him over for dinner and we were waiting and waiting for him to come over.. I looked outside and he was gabbing away on his cell phone. I locked the door and served dinner... Finally, I just said, when you are over, I would appreciate if you turned your cell phone off while you are here "you aren't that important and it can wait while you are visiting..." End of problem... LIkewise when we go to his house we don't even bring our phones in the house.

If you are in situations like you mentioned, the proper thing to do is to put your cell in vibrate mode if you want the phone open all the time. If you do get a call and you really have to take it, you have to excuse yourself and take the call where you can talk in private without disturbing anyone. Too bad many people don't do this.

Another vote for turning them off. Also I question even the intelligence of someone who feels this is a part of their "importance"!
You'll probably get some parents who disagree that their baby girl MUST be in contact at all time, well, Paris is 26 and able to fend with her newly acquired social skills.

I'm with you on this. I can't stand cell phone addicts. I even have a friend I don't call too often because when I am with her I am annoyed by her inapprporiate cell phone answering. I don't want to be on the other end of it, so I rarely call her.

I turn mine off when I'm in a situation where it would be considered rude, however......if I'm in that situation and my kids are in school, or not with me, I leave it on. I turn the volume to vibrate, but it is on. When it comes to my kids, I don't care what people think, if they need me I'm there. I do see what you're talking about though...and it is rude to have people gabbing away just to gab without considering other people. there is a huge differance in doing it because you're gabbing with someone and doing it in an emergency.

yes, it's really annoying when you hear those shrill ringtones wherever you go! especially when you're trying to unwind at dinner or watching a movie ... but its equally annoying when you can't reach someone when you REALLY need to because their phone is switched off. i always make it a point to switch to vibrate mode, so no one's disturbed, but i can be contacted in case of an emergency. that's what cell phones are for, remember?
