This is what worked for me:

-Wash it every other day or every three days, but no more.
-Stop using heat stylers.
-Use an anti-breakage shampoo (TreSemme's is AWESOME. There was a noticable difference the first time I used it in the amount of hair that ended up in my hair catcher.)
-Use an excellent detangling conditioner (I use Aussie's Mega Conditioner).
-Use scrunchies instead of elastics.
-Use a good detangling spray.
-Generally baby your hair when you're brushing or combing it. No yanking the knots out, etc.

Another thing I did was experiment with black hair products (but if you're white, don't use anything with mineral oil in it--it will make your hair sticky and greasy). I found (at Wal-Mart) African Royale BRX Braid & Extensions Sheen Spray. I spray my hair with it after I get out of the shower and it seems to have really helped a lot. It has tea tree oil in it (which is really good for your hair) and a whole bunch of other natural ingredients. I've really noticed a difference in my hair length since I started using it.
