A friend had her taxes filed by her friend. The preparer had my friends refund deposited in her account instead of my friends account.

Your friend had to sign a document directing that the funds be deposited in her "friends" account. If she did the "friend" can thank your friend for the gift because the IRS will not correct the problem if the deposit was accepted by the "friends" bank. My company does that about 5,000 time a season, but we in-turn write a check to the Taxpayer (minus our fees).

Your friend would have had to put her name on the tax preparer's bank account. Why would she do that? If her name is on the tax preparer's account, she should just withdraw the refund from the account.

She can file a complaint with the IRS but she'll have to recover through the local courts.
