I have 5 adult Danes and none of them are jumpers. My fences are 5 foot. The front yard is fenced with a 4 foot pickett fence and none of my dogs have attempted to jump it. They do jump on it though so I ran a string of wire around the top with electric k9 charger. That cured them of jumping on the fence. The wire is still there but it has not been plugged in for a few years now. Only took once of getting their nose zapped to stop them from getting on the fence.
I have heard of other Danes that jump fences but I think you will be safe with the 4 footer. There are always ways to deal with problems later if they arise. 4 Ft fence is better then none at all.
something-horrid.... I assure you that a Dane can indeed propel themselves over 3 foot fences and higher. Danes have the ability to be quite athletic. Here are some pictures of Danes in agility! http://www.morgandane.com/home.asp
kit-kat... ALL of my Danes are diggers. lol And their yard looks like it has been hit by large bombs. Danes are no different then any other dog. Some dig and some don't and the ones that do teach the ones that don't how to dig. lol

My sister has 3 great danes and tehy climbed teh 8 foot fence she had and did several times until she got an electric fence. She turned the fence to a low shock and after only 2 times not when has climbed or even jumped up on the fence.
None of her great danes are diggers.
abotua mile down the road someone has 2 great danes, a staffie and I think a mix and they are all in a 4 foot fenced yard sorry but the people are nasty so I don't know if they had to do anything I have noticed though none of the dogs go within a foot of teh fence so I think either an electric fence or underground may be being used.
On teh other hand my sisters great danes my 8 year old daughter could walk.

Oh yeah a dane can clear a 4 or 5 foot fence like it is a stepping stool, literally. If you get a puppy though put a hot wire fence around the top. It may sound cruel but getting zapped with it just a few times as a puppy will keep him form trying to touch it and he will learn the boundary. but then you also might have a digger too, so good luck. But yes danes are jumpers just as much as any other dog... if there is a viable reason to leave the yard and a way to do it, then wouldn't you do it too?

I have a 2 year old male purebred great dane, and I don't he could jump over a 6 inch fence...and even if he could, he wouldn't try. He is an extremely loyal dog, and even though he watched my other dog climb the fence and escape, the great dane has no desire to try to jump.
I think 4 ft is tall enough for sure.

Some dogs are just natural jumpers or climbers. I do Dane rescue and some have gotten over my 5 ft fence. Had one guy that went under. Had one girl that used her nose to open the gate. They are all different.
Any dog that I have had from puppyhood has not tried to get out of the yard. If you look at rescues, the foster parent can tell you if they have had any problems with the dog getting out.

Purebred Great Danes aren't jumpers. They physically cannot propel themselves over even a 3 foot fence. They are too heavy and they're legs are too long to be able to climb or jump.
As for your friend's Rott/Dane, I'm actually surprised he can jump a 5 foot fence. Both breeds are pretty large and usually can easily be contained in a normal fence. The dog might not be exactly half Dane and half Rott, he might have a smaller, more agile breed mixed in with his linage that makes him capable of achieving such high feats.
I, personally, don't think you should waste your money putting up another fence. As long as you plan to keep your Dane inside, train it, socialize it and don't leave it for a long periods of time, he shouldn't get bored or excited enough to even try to jump the fence.
I have a 5 month old Boxer that can jump up to my face and I'm 5 feet tall. I have no doubt she could scale my fence, but she doesn't have the desire to.

You have to take each dog for what it is... I have German Shepherds that can scale a 6 ft wall and a 39 in hurdle in competition.. but they all love their yard so stay in it. Now there is a little Shepherd in our club that jumps her fence at will... in and out...
Can't say what your dog will do... wait and see hon
Good Luck

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/p7n73
If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.
It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.
