You're probably right. And if I lived in present Iran I would be a streamlined Muslim. Why, if I lived in ancient Mexico I'd probably be a follower of Quetzalcoatl.
That's how it always works when you are living in oppression. The guys with the longer swords tell you what to do and what to believe. I'm quite happy that I live in a free country, but it seems you're unhappy with that.

Lad, one cannot "insult" what does not exist, by which I mean, the god of a Bronze Age tribe of murdering desert nomads.
As recently as two hundred years ago, give or take, in more than a few societies on this little blue rock an atheist would be tortured and hanged. A hop and a jump before those wonderful days, an atheist would have been burned alive. Reason to scurry off, don't you think? Still, many a bold human creature threw aside the myths and the absurdities which men in power, in this case the once-persecuted Christian church, had invented for their own greedy purposes. Next time you're in Rome, at the Vatican, take a look at the gold hanging from this wall, that wall, very nearly every wall.

If 50 million people believe a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing
— Anatole France
Et si omnes ego non -- Even if all, not me.
In questions of science the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual.
— Galileo Galilei
That which has been believed by everyone, always and everywhere, has every chance of being false.
— Paul Valéry, (1871-1945)
It has never mattered to me that thirty million people might think I'm wrong. The number of people who thought Hitler was right did not make him right... Why do you necessarily have to be wrong just because a few million people think you are?
— Frank Zappa
What the world needs is not dogma but an attitude of scientific inquiry combined with a belief that the torture of millions is not desirable, whether inflicted by Stalin or by a Deity imagined in the likeness of the believer.
— Bertrand Russell
The absurdity of a religious practice may be clearly demonstrated without lessening the numbers of people who indulge in it.
— Anatole France
One of the proofs of the immortality of the soul is that myriads have believed in it. They have also believed the world was flat.
— Mark Twain
The fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence that it is not utterly absurd; indeed, in view of the silliness of the majority of mankind, a widespread belief is more likely to be foolish than sensible.
— Bertrand Russell

It's called "paying lip service" -- public "belief" by saying and doing what's expected of you from your Betters under pain of death and torture -- in other words - private non-belief.
Oh, I hope you decide to time travel back to the "good old days" - Oh, you don't speak the language, you're not the preferred color, you've contracted an incurable sickness, you didn't bow and scrape low enough for the Deacon, farmer Bjorn's cow produced bad milk, or the bull died when you walked past, or you're wearing too rich an attire for a commoner or a barbarian, you can't say the Hail Mary's or the Lord's Prayer because you're a foriegner and you stammer through it in Latin - you're obviously in league with the Hordes of Hell, a Protestant/Catholic, and I swear I see Satan riding on your shoulder! You don't stink to high heaven, your clothes are clean, and have colors peaseants aren't allowed, and you're not (yet) infested with fleas. You've obviously never done a hard day's work in your life. Are you a knight avoiding your fealty? Are you trying to avoid the latest holy Crusade against the Musselman? You must be a thieving gypsie, or a Cathar, or a Lutheran, or a wizard, or a Sorceror -- a WITCH!!! -- so, you must at least be a Heretic; and most certainly a damned unrepentant sinner! Or --- Oh, sweet jeessusss forbid, you're one of those damnedchristkillingjews!! We must alert the Holy Inquistion!! Yep, your guilty!
Burn Baby Burn !!!!
Burn the Witch!
Smoke the Heretic!
Burn the Witch!
kill the jew!....
die, die, die, die, die!!!
(My apologies - that was the attitude you aspire to.)

Ha ha! It is precisely because we are NOT living in medieval times that Atheists feel as strongly as they do.
Science and reason has progressed since then, however much intellectually challenged Theists would have us believe otherwise.
Oh courser people would believe differently back then, there is a reason it is called The Dark Ages.
Truly some of you lot missed everything past 3rd grade.

There would be no atheists because is those times people were unable to make a decision about their religion as they were basically brainwashed into being told that god exists. Personally i don't see what all the fuss is about. People of today just think for themselves and have different oppinions, i'm quite happy to live along side religious people.
I do question thoses who are fanatical about their religion as wish to enforce it upon everbody.

well for starts people only believed because they was afraid. link below shows what the Catholic did to the poor and afraid. and how they was used to work for nothing. religion is and always has been about power. and you probably live longer keeping your head down and staying away from the catholics. but you probably be to afraid and work like a dog for your beliefs. atheist would keep heads down and work for money. for food. But there was probably not many atheist at that time people where more gullible back then and religion was played by fear. but people are still gullible sometimes even more so.

In the medieval era, rulers and priests bound God in with their own agendas. "God" always agreed with them and got mixed in with their plans. You seem to be the same way. Thankfully, you are not a ruler.
God save me from your followers!

Would you be as smug as you lit the bonfires burning us up at the stake because we didn't believe as you did?
No wonder Christianity has such a bad rep for being full of evil, hateful, fearful, ignorant people.
