I'm planning on moving from Australia to the UK in November and I'm hoping to start work straight away. However, I'm meeting family in Scotland during Christmas for 2 weeks and am afraid that if I start an accounts position (which I have experience in) then I'll have to quit the job almost as soon as I start to actually get to Scotland for the Chrissy break. Would it be better just to look for bar work, or something similar, until Christmas, then start my accounts work once I come back...?

Yes I think thats a great idea - especially over christmas - bars and restaurants will be crying out for extra help and people feel extra generous at Christmas so the tips will be good! Good luck!

it depends really! a christmas time bars etc are crying out for people and they need all the extra help they can get, you might even get a nice bonus from the tips you get etc.
on the other hand, why not secure a job in accounting, and still go on your hol to scotland, because most places will honour all your holiday that youve booked as long as you tell them straight away.
its up to you, but remeber that most companies will close down for a week/2 weeks before or after christmas!!

good luck!! hope you like it here!! where will you be staying??

My sister has worked in a few walkabout bars and they cater well for austaralians who are over here visiting or studying. They have staff houses for you to saty in and are pretty easy going about your time working with them aslong as you put the hours in.Most major cities have a walkabout bar and you would probably be working with other austalians.
Last year when they had all finished a shift a christmas dinner was put on specifically for the australians here at christmas time and they do make it home from home for you ,aswell as getting to meet lots of new and interesting peolpe.
That way you dont feel so pressured until you start doing what you are qualified to do.Good luck!

Actually, a lot of companies in the UK close down for around two weeks over Christmas so you might be ok! Also if you say you have holiday booked when you are interviewed, most companies would honour that.

you're probably best going for a proper job - bars and shops always want extra staff around christmas but they're unlikely to want to employ you if you're not going to be there at peak time - christmas and new year is always mad busy. whereas with an office job, most places close down over christmas and if you say before you start they'll probably be fine about it, also, then you get to spend christmas knowing you've got a job to go back to.
