My mum had to have a kidney removed when young.she lived all her life with no undue affect.The healthy kidney
doubled in size to compensate for doing the work of two.

No, you can easily go about your daily life without a kidney. Think of all the people who have donated kidneys to others who need a transplant. All that would have happened with your friend is the one kidney he does have would be bigger than normal to cope with the increased amount of blood it needs to filter.

i had my kidney removed 6 weeks ago and my kidney is working at 80% i have been told by my doctor that i can have a normal life.
