I have ridiculous tension in my body, the worst part is that sometimes I will go for months on end with intense chest pounding and palpitations and I can even feel my heart pounding when its at a normal pulse rate. I also have TMJ issues and frequent twitching, etc. Doctors have told me its "just anxiety" however I wonder if the root cause here is something more. Does anyone have similar symptoms, have they found out how to fix it, cause I'm at a level so intense that the casual "just relax" concept doesn't work - I have to continually shake my leg just so I don't feel my chest pounding. Maybe this is hyperthyroidism, is that a symptom? It seems that the hyperthyroid can actually cause anxiety too, maybe its both?

you do not mention your age but you definitely NEED a full medical workup

the best advice that I can offer is to look in your local phone book under mental health- phone them, make an appointment and tell the therapist or social worker the same things that you have said here. Be willing to take some direction. I have had chronic depression my whole life which is okay with medication but the tension that you describe may be a combination of physical and psychological. Find out specifically WHAT you are anxious about and learn about self- talk. With help it CAN be changed and you will be a whole new person

Certainly you need to see an MD. Not sure I would blame it all on Anxiety as a CAUSE---IT may be more the result of an underlying situation---such as---tachcardia--fast pulse rate due to various situations with diet-blood pressure--or other.
My tachcardia always results in my anxiety which increases my BP even more. You might ask your doctor about drugs like Atenolol which I take in low dosage every day, but increase the dosage at onset of anxiety (some call panic attacks) and that with relaxation techniques limits the problem to about one hour. I have lived with this for 40 years so hang in there until you get something you can live with.

Anxiety is tough. Are you anemic? Low red blood cells can cause arrythmia too. You are probably on the right track by thinking there is a core problem. You could be having anxiety attacks but my guess is its your bodies way of handling the core problem. Find another opinion,
