For example, an ice cream carton, a microwaveable dinner box....How do you know if it's recyclable if there is no sign on the carton/box itself?

If it is made from paper or cardboard it is automatically recyclable. First quality paper is made from wood or textiles. Cardboard is made from recycled (repulped) paper or board so all materials are biodegradable (meaning they will rot) so all products are recyclable.

In the case of ice cream cartons wax is applied to the board so that is still recyclable.

The depends where you live.City 'a' will take those items as recycle but city 'b' will not because they do not have the facilities to process yet. the best it to check the local recycling guidelines in you area. these change and it is confusing most of the time any thing with the sign is recycle always.

No. If it has a symbol on it, it's letting you know the box was made from recycled paper. Not whether or not it is recyclable.

um... well, if it is waxy or has metalish stuff like if it's a meal like pizza that helps cook it, and it has that silver stuff on it, i don't think you're supposed to recycle it, but you can just ask the recycling center (online) or just put it in there and let them decide if it's recyclable. lol good luck!

throw it in the recycle box anyway, let the recyling center determine if they want to send it to the people that throw just about any paper product in the pulp vat, or not.

don't have the facilities to process it??!
they smash all the paper products into a bale, and ship it off to a place who dumps them into huge tanks and boils them into pulp. everything else is separated by the pulping procedure. drop it in your recycle bin.
