I use ordinary briefs.
A bit tight.
And 100% cotton.
Then wear your groing guard on top of that.
Diesel(s) and Renoma(s) work best for me.

If you don't feel like wearing a groin protector then wear ordinary briefs. They are tight fitting and comfortable with good support. Not to sound nasty, but they also keep certain hairs from falling onto the mat. God knows that is probably the nastiest thing to see when you are rolling.... ugh.

any kind you feel comfortable wearing with a cup.
personally I wear boxers with the cup over and Ive never felt uncomfortable. Then again I've been doing that with just about every activity requireing a cup since I played football in HS over a decade ago so it could be I've just gotten used to it. (I think- i can't even remember if I wore boxers then....)

Go Commando! : P Think about it, you have an extra limb to hit your opponent with, it'll be your 5 against his 4. Go Commando! But if you don't wanna show some balls then just wear a jockstrap, the extra support would help.

Compression shorts, preferably Under Armor or another which wicks away moisture, and a cup w/ stabilizer straps. The jewels stay protected, stationary, and ready for anything.

A crotchless G-string with frilly lace, If you can kick butt while wearing that, you have my respect.
In all honesty though you want something that will breath and support "the essentials". I prefer boxer briefs, the tight kind, or bycycle shorts (although they don't breath as well).
