I’m not technically a Theist, but…
I think if one had a choice, and they actually supported the existence of a place of eternal damnation and torture – they are either;
a.) quite sure they won’t end up there, and they don’t care about anyone else.
b.) quite sure they won’t end up there, and actually enjoy the thought of others suffering.
c.) so selfish that they would allow others to suffer so they could experience pleasure.
d.) not quite able to grasp your question (the part about it being YOUR choice) so they fall back on telling you what their religion tells them to say.
Personally, I can’t imagine choosing a system where people are tortured for eternity - Especially if it’s mirrored by people who live in complete bliss.
In seems incredibly cruel, calloused and arrogant to think that you deserve an “afterlife” full of joy and love, while someone who may have lived a life comparable to yours in every way, except a belief in God, would be thrown into a “lake of fire” for all eternity.
All this assumes, of course, that you believe Heaven and Hell are literal and more along the lines of the classic definition. (I.e. Pearly Gates and Lake of Fire)
If you instead believe that they are more “a state of mind” or a “closeness or separation from God”, then you aren’t really addressing an “afterlife”.
But even then, choosing to let others suffer so that you could have closeness to God or a calmer state of being seems incredibly selfish to me.

Don't some people have hell on earth while they are alive? Think of those who are suffering now, or people who go to jail, people who kill and torture in this life. It is like hell for them and others who are around them. As long as there is hate in this world, there is a very real place called hell.
Hell is a very real feeling that we have all felt at some point. That feeling can easily continue into the next life, so yes there is a hell. Foolish to say there isn't.
To answer your question I would rather there was a heaven and hell vs. no afterlife. But again, if we can experience these feelings while we are alive, we will most certainly feel these feelings again, good or bad when we die.
For those who don't believe in an afterlife, where do our feelings come from? It doesn't come from our flesh. Love and hate is a feeling and is spiritual by nature. The very core of who you are is not made up of flesh, but of spirit.

Heaven and hell are in our minds. When you do good, your mind is happy, calm, fulfilled.. and you are in heaven. When you do all nonsense, you yourself know that you are doing wrong, you feel guilty, unhappy, tense and you are in the hell. There is no place called heaven somewhere up in the sky.
Your body and the energy in the body is here on this universe in some or other form since begining and will be here till the end. So there is nothing like before life, and after life. Life is eternal.
Every belief system propagated the concepts of heaven and hell to control the believers. Actually all the belief systems are our enemies.

This is under the premise that heaven and hell are places rather than positions If one perceives them as the distance one is from God ( heaven being close to and Hell farther from) Then your question is would I prefer a universe where I can choose to be close to or away from God or one in which I simply stop existing as soon as my braib stops functioning and all i have done is for nothing. I think I would choose the first one.

Hell is separation from God. There is no other hell.
What about hell fire you ask? Does not our bible tell us about hell fire? Is not hell fire something to avoid? Well yes and yes but no. Why no?
Well astronomers tell us if a nova happened on our galaxy perhaps as long as 2010 years ago we would have little warning and perhaps would not experience it at all. Why you ask? Because the first impulse of radiation would kill us instantly, so quickly in fact that our nervous system would not have time to react, therefore no awareness, except of course for the true believer who would then be standing on a sea of glass.
and before the throne, as it were a sea of glass like a crystal; Revelation 4:6 ASV (first part)
And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, [and] over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God. Revelation 15:2 KJV
The description of Revelation aside for a moment, the result of a nova, not to mention the possible super nova, would at least melt our little planet, therefore the sea of glass. The intense heat from the nova would first likely turn our reality into plasma which would as it cooled become pure elemental crystals.

Personally I do not believe in eternal damnation. I cannot imagine a kind Creator allowing such a place to exist.
but if it did exist I would much rather their be no afterlife for anyone.

Totally the same as you, the very notion of ETERNAL torture is just inconcievably horrible.

They need Hell so they can scare people into believing. It is a man made concept. Not even mentioned in the bible. Ask a witness about that. They study the bible and don't believe in Hell at all.
