In my understanding, until Christ fulfilled his purpose on the cross. His ancestors and all others waiting for redemption were awaiting and then woken from there sleep, saved, judged and on to the heavens. Purgatory is a Catholic belief. I grew up Catholic and ended up as a non-denominational christian. If we die, there is no purgatory, we go straight to judgment. It's a misconception or misuse of its meaning. Christ has done his sacrifice and if we have failed to accept and embrace his deed he will not vouch for us at our judgment. Once someone dies, no ones prayers will make a difference. That individual will be judged accordingly.

Purgatory was a stop-gap method to quell people's resentment at the fact that everyone who accepts Christ gets to go to Heaven, regardless of the nature or severity of their sins. The idea was that you do in fact have to pay for all of your sins, but eventually get to Heaven, unlike the lost in Hell. Since the worse sins are punished harsher in the purgatorial waiting room, it was a way of retaining the faith and calming believers sense of unfairness.

Your personal knowledge of authentic Christian theology has been stunted by the limitations of your chosen faith tradition.
St. Paul explains it all right here:
1Co 3:10 According to the grace of God that is given to me, as a wise architect, I have laid the foundation: and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
1Co 3:11 For other foundation no man can lay, but that which is laid: which is Christ Jesus.
1Co 3:12 Now, if any man build upon this foundation, gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble:
1Co 3:13 Every man's work shall be manifest. For the day of the Lord shall declare it, because it shall be revealed in fire. And the fire shall try every man's work, of what sort it is.
(HEAVEN:)
1Co 3:14 If any man's work abide, which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
(PURGATORY:)
1Co 3:15 If any mans work burn, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved, yet so as by fire.
1Co 3:16 Know you not that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
(HELL:)
1Co 3:17 But if any man violate the temple of God, him shall God destroy. For the temple of God is holy, which you are.

People who go to Purgatory are in the state of grace. However, they are being refined for the greater glory of Heaven.

They can't. There is no purgatory. When you die, it's over. Your chance for obtaining salvation has past.

You neither are born nor die in sin---that's bumper bar rubbish!!--Nor is there such a place as purgatory--it is a product of human imagination. We see Catholicism has just done away with another concept--limbo---maybe soon they'll do away with purgatory--& perhaps one day they'll even treat woman as equals.--Like all Christian tribes--Catholicism has its faults.

That didn't stop the early church from collecting a whole lot of money for "pardons". Martin Luther should have nailed his treatise to their foreheads.
