Come to think of it, the only time I use ma'am is when a woman is blocking an isle at the store and I say "Excuse me ma'am".

You use the term ma'am on mature, and older women. Other wise if it is a younger women, you can use the term "lady".
Like excuse me lady, can I help you young lady. Whether a woman is ugly, or pretty, has nothing to do with what term you use.

I don't know about you but I call no one ma'am as I see the beauty in everyone and don't ever see anyone as "old". No matter how old they are, I call strangers: "young man! or young lady!" And often tell older people (whenever they point out that it's fine and dandy for us younger folks but I their age...) and tell them that they are mere babes in the stream of time... whereas compared to a thousand years, of the coming Millennium promised to us by a God who cannot lie, or compared to a million or more years of living which is what we will all be doing in the promised Kingdom of God to come, what is fifty, seventy, eighty or even a hundred years? And it never fails to put a smile on their faces as they reply: "You know what? You are right!" and I don't know if it's just my imagination but there is a definite sudden lightness in their steps as I watch them walking away!

You call any woman that you should show respect to ma'am.
This could be your mother, your grandmother, a female judge, a female doctor, your female boss or just a woman who is a generation older than you. While we are deciding who should be called what, in your opinion do you call a disrespectful teenager, a punk?
