Dream interpretation. What does this mean?

For many years now I have had a reoccurring dream. I have probably had this dream more than 75 times.

Once in college I had this dream. I woke up sometime between 2am and 3am, went to the dorm water fountain for a quick drink. I encountered a friend there from the same floor and oddly enough told him I had just had a weird dream. I began describing it and he started filling in the gaps of my description. We had the same dream, woke up at the same time, and both went to get a drink of water.

So this normally has to do with myself out by a small body of water. Sometimes the water is murky sometimes it is crystal clear. I always see carp in the water swimming. Sometimes I pick them up with my hands and sometimes I am afraid of them and then fall into the water creating even more fear.
Is there any type of universal meaning for this fish? Or is this some type of personal symbolism?

It seems to me that it is your regular habit to check in to your emotional state when you are dreaming, kind of a reality check, the different states of the water and the fish, are your way of telling yourself how you are doing.... When the water is murky, you are in a time of confusion, when it is peaceful and clear, you feel that you thinking is clear, and serene, when you catch the fish, you are noticing that you had a special insight during the day, on those times when you become afraid of the fish, and let them fall back in to the water like that, you have had an insight that is causing you fear of the changes or implications of what it means to you, or perhaps on the verge of an insight but not ready to address it yet. If you happen to be Christian, the fish may also hold other meanings for you, and that would be something for you to meditate on as well... But yes, these are universal symbols, I have seen them before as well.

For all you know, both of you may end up working in the same company or become business partners. This is represented by the same source of water source.

Waking up at 2-3 am and having the same dreams could mean both of you have eventually discovered your purposes in life.

As for the fish and the clarity of water... hmm not too sure...

Tying to meet some goal that you setup for yourself. It seems that fish is the goal, and you are trying to reach your goal under various circumstances. When the water is murky then it may signify that goal is hard to reach.
