Here is a place for you to start... network with those looking for the same answers.
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/IND/INDIA.html
And an email list. You can browse through the archived messages.
Basic rule in any research.... identify relevant records, and where to run them down. These are only two points that I find with the phrase India genealogy using google.
And.. when you are more familiar with the resources, please hang out here. We have others asking, and you can be our expert.

It's best to start with your grandparents' names, birthdates, and death dates, where they were born/died, etc. There are many sites on the internet that I use: www.familysearch.org ; www.rootsweb.com ; www.genealogy.com ; www.gencircles.com ; www. ancestry.com (they have a 2 week free trial membership and then they start charging you for use of their records) ; www.cyndislist.com ; www.kindredkonnections.com (about like ancestry.com), etc.
After you find their names, just click on any link shown (like for THEIR parents---your great-grandparents---and on back). Shouldn't matter if you are east Indian or not. If they are in a database, you'll be able to find it. Good luck.

East India as in now Bangladesh?

You may find your best help and widest exposure at the message boards for surnames, and places, at ancestry.com or rootsweb.com, as well as rootsweb's email lists for surnames and places.
