I've had problems with my gall bladder over the past several years. Last fall, I started throwing up and having severe pain. I was so sick and so weak, I finally gave in and went to the ER. The dr. said I had a gastrointestinal flu and gave me meds for it. For several days afterwards, I was still so sick, I thought I was going to die. For 3+ weeks after, I was weak, very sick. The dr. gave me antibiotics and I finally began to feel better. Someone later asked me it it might have been my gall bladder that caused my problem. Could a gall bladder attack cause those symptoms? Can a all bladder rupture and someone live through it? I know if it ruptured, there could be a major infection, but I did take antibiotics.

I too, have never seen a ruptured gall bladder, but it could be possible if it had become gangrenous; however, the odds of you living through that would be about zero--you would have a horrible peritonitis (infection & inflammation of the abdominal cavity) from the bile draining in to the area as well as infection. Pain from the gall bladder can be due to stones without infection as well as from infected ducts that drain the bile. Pain on the right upper abdomen just at edge of the ribs is where gall bladder pain starts. From your symptoms it is hard to make a diagnosis but if you weren't particularly tender over the gall bladder on exam; that may be why you were diagnosed with some thing else. At some point you should have a gall bladder ultrasound to look for stones.

Ruptured Gallbladder

Oddly enough, my husband has a ruptured gall bladder. Curiously he had severe drop to your knees pain and went to hospital. He is a Vet and they could not transfer him to a VA hospital ( out of beds) so they sent him home with pain killers. Before they did they had taken an ultra sound. Told him that he had a gall bladder attack----but also three or four large masses in abdomen. Led us to believe cancer. He has been dealing with VA for 4 months--tests etc. Confirmed Gall Bladder. But masses were not malignant. They are sacs of fluid in his abdomen. Possible leakage from gall bladder. Your article leads me to believe this may be bile??
They just told him that the gall bladder indeed had a rupture. Cannot do surgery yet due to complications with his heart. He is undergoing angioplasty today. They made it sound like the gall bladder could wait????? Sounds like we should really be concerned?? Needless to say you can function with ruptured gall bladder ----but not reccommended

It could have been your gallbladder or gastritis or a number of other things. I have never seen a gallbladder rupture and I have been a RN for 11 yrs. If one ever did it would be adire situation probably leading to sepis and death
