There are no institutions in the Arab world. Hence this is how they fight over power.

This is one mad supremacy struggle.

Yes, it is similar to the Irgun / Haganah fighting that happened before the decleration of Israel. The Irgun (etzel), however had broken away from the more moderate Haganah. Hamas has not broken away from Fatah.

Syrians and Persians are playing their cards in the Iraq, Lebanon, and Palestinian territories.

Hamas, backed by Syrians are clashing with Fatah who are more western-backed.

Hamas is seizing control of Gaza Strip and bombing Fatah security strongholds, and they appear to be close to controlling gaza strip.

Israel pulled back their troops from Gaza in 2005, and now look who Arabs are behaving...

You cannot build modern states without institutions. It's just impossible.

Mark, genius, just genius. Of course! Israel unilaterally withdrew from the Gaza Strip, something the Palestinians had been adamantly and violently demanding, forcing Israeli citizens from their homes and into transit camps for a year because they knew this gesture of peace would cause civil war. Yes, how cunning. Everyone knows that Israelis were secretly overjoyed when a terrorist entity bent on their destruction was given power on their border. You could practically see Israelis partying in the streets when the rockets started falling. But ya know what mark, I guess the only solution is that Israel should never withdraw from anywhere again - obviously it would just be to cause civil war.

Listen- there will never ever be peace unless the other side stops blaming everything on Israel. Stubbed your toe? Not Israel's fault. Fell down the stairs? Not Israel's fault. Anarchy brought about by power struggle? NOT ISRAEL'S FAULT. Israel made a huge one-sided gesture for peace, and it induced more warlike behaviour in the other side - NOT ISRAEL'S FAULT.

Anyway, I think Hamas is attacking Fatah not really just for power. Hamas is a violent organization; it trains it's militants to want to destroy. I think that for the most part, the leadership doesn't have too much control of the conflict. I feel like they just have attack dogs that they let loose and hope something good happens. Also, Hamas was elected based on the fact that it was a strong militant party. No better way to gain back popularity then to prove it.

EDIT: Forgot to mention something. I don't think the Hamas-Fatah violence is really that similar to any etzel haganah violence. I'm no expert, but to the best of my knowledge etzel-niks never threw hagana members off the tops of 18 story buildings, or held public bloody executions in the streets.

For power. Since Hamas was voted in, many governments cut off their foreign aid.
Fatah is fading and has western support. The pressures which are crushing Lebanon are affecting Palestine, too. I had read recently, over the weekend that Dubai is holding a huge arms sale for the Arab governments and that Saudi Arabia is arming to attack Iran.

It is a power struggle between Hamas and Fatah for control of the Palestinian people and the hope of a future Palestinian State. What is going on between Hamas and the Fatah really has no parallel in its depth, violence, and ideology with the last years prior to Israeli independence. What I mean in that is that although Irgun and the Haganah had their disputes - they never broke down between each other into the blood baths we are currently seeing between the two different Palestinian groups. There was a level that Jews don't kill Jews among the waring groups which does not similarly exist among the different Palestinian groups.

Good Luck!!!

Looking at big picture of the Middle East, we can see why there is fighting within the Palestinian groups.
Israel master plan for the right to Palestine to exist is to delay any peaceful resolution that will end up with a viable Palestinian state.
Israel withdrawal from Gaza was a 1st step toward a Palestinian civil war and to make sure of the civil war they demanded a Palestinian election. Hamas was not ready to lead a political government and Hamas strategy is based on the opposition of the Oslo's agreement. The Israeli knew that Hamas will win the next election because Israel have weaken the Fatah government and most Palestinian will not vote for a weak party.
Hamas Vs. Fatah led to Mecca understanding to create a national government where Hamas must honer all the agreement signed by the former governments and leave the negotiation part with Israel to the PLO and any agreement with Israel must be voted on by the entire Palestinian people.
This agreement did not go well with the Israeli planers so they started the new stage of attacks on all sides.
What is going on in Palestine remind us of what was going on in the old South Africa. We all remember when the South African government called for the Creation of black state for the Zolo and civil war which took place between the native south Africans. Thank God it did not work in South Africa.
The Israeli gaza plan is the South African Zolo plan. Did it work in South africa. Why should it work in Palestine?

Because Hamas wants to continue the resistance against Israel (i.e terrorism)and get their own state in place of sirael and Fatah want to recognise Israel and get their own state in Gaza and the West Bank.

Power. Each wants control over Palestine... -& the poor, ordinary, palistinan people are caught in the middle. Unfortunately- this may actually end up ENDING the dream of a Palistinian Homeland, instead of advancing it. It's a real tragedy in the making... :(

The fight is over power and political disagreements of course.

MikeInRI Jews did kill each other. Izhak Rabin himself gave the order to shoot at the Jewish refugees who were bringing arms into a new-reborn Israel. Many people died that day.
But it never happened again since.

Institutions are important, but it is also their culture that makes these people shoot one another and not cry about it (like Jews did).

as two other people have already mentioned the answer is

Power

Hamas and Fatah somehow cannot grasp the fact that in a democracy that opposing political parties debate, legislate, and at times slander one another.

Somehow that has translated into shooting each other.

Apparently this is the partner that Israel is supposed to negotiate peace with.
G-d help us all.

Same reason why the U.S. is over there fighting.. to enforce their way of life onto other. Sad.. instead of a civilize solution we all resorts to violence just to say "I am right and you're wrong."
