Hi, I have Teddy Bears ( bichon/shih tzu mix). Very cute and loving dogs. They are about 10-12 pounds when full grown. some may even be smaller depending on parents. My little dogs get along with every dog that comes over to play. Good luck finding a playmate!

A few years ago, we lost our Yorkie to Cushing's Disease. When we were ready to get a new puppy a few months later, we came up with a list of four breeds and could not narrow it further. They were Maltese, bichon Frisee, Miniature Schnauzer, and Havanese.

I called our vet to get his advise. He listened to our list and after all of 3 seconds thought, he replied:
"My first choice would be the Miniature Schnauzer. My second choice would be the Miniature Schnauzer. My third choice would be the Miniature Schnauzer. And my fourth choice would be the Miniature Schnauzer. The best dog I ever owned was a Miniature Schnauzer, and when I retire and don't have seventeen dogs, three horses and a hundred head of cows, I'm getting me another Miniature Schnauzer!"

We followed his advise and have been most happy with our Miniature Schnauzer. Her name is Pepper and she is sweet, affectionate, and highly intelligent. She and our big dog, a Great Pyrnees get along great.

In addition to their other fine qualities, Miniature Schnauzers do not shed.

I think most small companion dogs would do well with him. Another Maltese or Bichon or pug, Shih Tzu, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel...

hello there,
i have a maltese and a silky.
my maltese was here first and he was a bit lonely as well so we decided just like you to get another dog. we got a little silky terrier as it was the dog my maltese chose to be with. we took him into the pet shop and he looked at all the other dogs and stopped at her cage. she was been in the pet shop for 2 years so she wasn't my first choice as she wasn't trained at all and already 2 years old but she was adorable and my maltese looves her! i think a small breed would be the better choice as a companion for your dog but first and foremost your dog must like the other dog.
good luck finding a good partner for your dog.

We have had a couple bichons, and they are extremely friendly and patient. They aren't snappy or short tempered, and are great with small children, so I would think a bichon would be a very good playmate and would get along well with your puppy.
Good luck! =)
