In 1986 I started my first year of teaching making $14,000 a year. Teachers where I started my teaching career are now earning approx. $27000 a year for the first year.

Average starting salaries for college graduates range between $30k and $50k (see link)

If you do not have a degree, then you may expect a lower starting salary. If you don't have a high school diploma, even lower. If you have a graduate degree (bachelors/masters) you can probably expect more than those without.

Your starting salary depends on many factors: Where you live, your line of work, your level of experience, your level of education and the demand for employee's in your particular field. I doubt the starting salaries of Yahoo answerers is any indication of what you may expect to start out earning.

My first job out of college was $25,500/year. I also got a geographical area increase, so I really made about $28,000. That was in 1995 and when I took the job I thought the offer was decent. I didn't know that the company I worked for was going to make me work 60-80 hours a week. They really milked the whole salary thing so it turned out I was probably making $5 an hour! I would expect that now you would start out somewhere in the $35,000-$50,000 range depending on the line of work you are in. But I do think that too many college grads expect to start out making six figures. That's very unlikely.

I started out in an entry level IT position making $28,000/yr. Later I found out that this company didn't realize what IT really was, what it was worth to them, and what the rest of the industry was paying. I've moved on and now make a much better wage. If you're career is in IT, I suggest something entry level to figure out the right path since there are so many niche positions, and then once you find it, specialize in it and start making bank.

With a degree in English I made about $18,000 the first year. This is 10 years later and I now make just under $25,000.
