Regardless of what brand you like, get all 5 (or 6) speakers of the IDENTICAL make and model...That's how they mix movie soundtracks in the studio, on 5 identical speakers...It's such a waste to have "coffin-sized" speakers for the FRONTS, a "bread-loaf-sized" speaker for the CENTER and then "toaster-sized" speakers for the REAR...Sounds terrible...Trust me.

I recently found amazing little speakers for $400 a pair. With a sub and a center channel speaker, you'd be looking at about $1500. I call that a bargain. Would you? Or are you looking for $3-400 for the whole thing?

$50 a pair? Wow! May as well throw your money out the window.

Speakers need to be listened to. What appeals to me may not appeal to you. Good speakers are close to neutral as they are designed to reproduce the sound, not create it which explains why really good amplifiers do not have bass or treble controls.

Go to your local "hi-end" stereo store and start educating yourself with salespeople who know what they're talking about. No they won't have surround speaker sets for $400 but you may be surprised by what they do have in the lower price range.

A great place to look for this type of bargain is SearchAllDeals. Just start with a search term like "surround sound speakers"

You really shouldn't buy "budget" speakers. You will lose in sound quality. Definitive Technology has a very good line of speakers. Pro Cinema 600 for like $900 bucks. If quality is not important just go buy the cheapest speakers at best buy.

lol, radio shack. are you serious dude? i got my speakers from "American" its a big store, and they have really good speaker ie, Klipsch, Sony, Polk Audio, Energy, Bose, JBL, and others i cant remember. my energy tower speakers cost 300 each, and the center polk audio was 200 i believe. they crank out some serious sound, and at high volumes.. get the best you can afford, and remember, dont just go to one store, look around, and listen to as much stuff as you can.

Hi.First i will need to know the continuous output in watts of your 5.1 Receiver. What brand sub do you have and what is its power rating. Speakers add their own "sound" (coloration) to whatever they are reproducing. Basically they fall into 3 categories.Speakers that are bright sounding(high frequency prominence).Speakers that emphasize the mid range (vocal prominence) Speakers that don't emphasize any part of their frequency range (neutral).
So i would have to know what type of speaker "sound" would suit you

These 5.25" Polks are the best at $50/pair.

Three pairs will give you 6.1, but it sounds like your receiver is a little dated. So I would suggest a factory refurbished and warrantied Onkyo receiver:

Along with some 12gauge speaker wire and banana plugs:
