I got a replacement passport in a few hours. If you have a ticket, or proof of impending travel I know you can get a replacement passport very quickly, but you have to go to a branch office in person (i.e. a major city).
Based on this website, I believe that may apply to new passports as well:

Sorry. But you're going to have to calm down- and get in line; because you & alot of other people, are not going to get their Passports- any time soon. Now if you happen to be going to Canada, or Mexico- you'll be ok. -All you'll need is a couple of of ID's (birth. cert.; photo ID., etc.). But forget about going off the Continent for awhile. Whatever the case, try to take it easy, & decompress alittle. Perhaps that vacation will do you some good. Good luck.

The rules have been temporarily relaxed if traveling to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean, so you only need proof of application to travel there, and a photo id. And the application you can bring up on-line and print as your temporary copy and proof that you filed for passport and still waiting.

You pay extra and order it to be expedited. Even still, they are running way behind!

Where are you going? The rules have been temporarily relaxed if traveling to Canada, Mexico or the Carribean, so you only need proof of application to travel there, and a photo id.

FIrst you need to seek medical help not just flee your problems.

Second they government just passed a "law" which states anyone who has applied for a VISA needs to keep the receipt and that will be their proof. Visa's are taking too long and people are complaining it's conflicting with their traves. So rest assure you can still travel just keep your receipt!~
