I have two cats, near the same age. The big one (18 lbs) is aggressive toward the little one (8 lbs) when the little one comes home from the vet. I've tried taking them both - that was a disaster! I've tried cat pheromones. I've tried wiping them both with the same towel to make them share the same scent. Nothing helps. The hissing and swatting goes on for days, and because of the size diff, I can't leave them together. Any other ideas? The little one has been spending some time with the vet lately due to some health problems, and may need surgery, so we really need to solve this.

I've read that simply punshing the cats when they are aggressive towards each other may not always work. View it as positive and negative association.

The cat thinks "When I'm around this cat, I get sprayed with water/yelled at."

Try getting their favorite cat treats, putting the cats in the same room (as close to each other as possible without them getting violent) and giving them both some treats. Try to change their thinking to "When I'm around this cat, good things happen."

Constantly using a negative response may be detrimental to their behavior.

I can't promise this to be a sure thing, but it's worth a shot if spraying water doesn't help.

Ohhh. This is probably why your big cat is being aggressive. Often animals can tell when others are sick. Your big cat probably doesn't want to be near the little one or just is getting a kick out of being a bully. How long have they been in the same house? Were they properly introduced (separated for a few days)? I hope your little one is ok!

well, keep them separated when the little one comes home, seriously. Then you should also not except the agressive behavior when it happens...sanction--without violence. Separate him for a little while. Then let him out again, sanction again when he does it again. This might take a while, but it should work--since the cat will get clued in, hopefully.

Now...when he is being good, give attention to just him over the little kitty. Then you will also have to give attention to the little kitty over him. If all else fails, watch them closely. Is it the larger one that is really the agressor? Sometimes kittens will go over to the older cats and annoy the heck out of them until the larger one decides not to take it any longer.

Treat them like kids. Yell at them when they start to fight. Also use a spray bottle and spray them with water or more so spray whom ever is the starter of the fight. You can try smacking the paws. We did that when we had more than one cat it worked for us. I wish your little one a healthy recovery.
