A bail bondsmen is the person who pays the court the amount of your bail and gets you released from lockup while you are awaiting trial generally.

You usually have to pay about 10% of the total bail and then you have a contract with teh bail bondsman to pay them the rest plus their fee later.

Example. You get a dui, the bail is set at 1000 dollars. You call the bail bondsman and you pay him 100 dollars. He then pays the court the 1000 dollars and you owe the bail bondsman 900 dollars plus his fee.

Usually however if you show up for court the bail is refunded and the bondsman gets his money back and you only owen them the 10% you paid. If you skip out though then they hire a bounty hunter or detective if it is a large amount of money to track you down.
