Illegal to kill a bird in California?

I was just wondering if it is illegal to kill a bird in California as my neighbor has been out trying to shoot one for the past few weeks. The other neighbor got mad and decided to steal the bb gun

I don't know about California, but certain birds are protected nationally as well as regionally. Also there are hunting laws. If the bird is taken out of season or without a license, then that is definetely illegal. There are also laws regarding the use of weapons within city limits. Generally, bb guns are not allowed to be used in city limits.

Check local laws. By the way, stealing is also illegal in most cases.

I suspect you are talking about a "pet" bird or might it be some wild bird possibly damaging to a business/farm..?!! Might be considered cruelty to animals if not done for basic subsistance/food..!! Theft of the BB gun is a whole other can of worms..!! Contact the California Game Warden to inquire about any questions concerning the legality of the bird..!!

Not if you have a hunting license and it is the season to shoot that bird. I would say it is never a good idea to shoot a BB gun in the city. They could arrest him for discharging a firearm within a quarter mile of an occupied structure times how many houses are within that quarter mile of his house. That is AZ anyway.
