RUN AWAY! this is probably not a reputable breeder. If he was he would have explained all of this to you.

Edit: and he would have already registered the litter.

When you get a dog that is AKC (American Kennel Club) registered - you should get a paper that will allow you to make up a registered name for your dog. At one time this was called the AKC Registration Application. The name may or may not have changed. On this paper will be the breed, the date of birth, the name of the sire and the name of the dam. The breeders name will be listed as well as the litter owners name and address. It will also list the coat colors and circle if the dog is a male or a female.
Once that registration paper is sent in, then you will recieve a paper that is very similar to the registration paper -but this will be your dogs AKC registration.
With this paper - you can choose to buy either a 3 or 4 generation pedigree. I personally prefer to buy the 4 generation as this will tell you about (4th generation - your dog); (3rd generation - the dogs parents); (2nd - generation your dogs grandparents) finally the (4th generation- the dogs great-grand parents). The dam (mothers) will always be on the bottom of the page and the sire (father) will always be on the top of the page. Also on the registration - after the dogs name will be any titles that the dog held - for example CD stands for Companion Dog. On the back of the pedigree are abbreviations for titles, abbreviations for colors and markings as well as abbreviations for the countries.
To my knowledge I DON'T BELIEVE THAT THE OWNER CAN SCAN THE PAPERS - THEY MUST COME STRAIGHT FROM THE AKC.
While you didn't state exactly what type of puppy that you are buying - if it is a very large breed ( German Shepherd, Mastiff, Rottweiler for example) please make sure that the parents have been OFA'd (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) as large breed tend to have hip displaysia (bad hips)
if you have problems - you can go online to www.akc.org and they have a ton of information that will help. I believe they have copies of what all the paperwork will look like.
Ask the owners of the puppy if you can see the pedigrees of both the dam and the sire. It will have a number under the dogs registered name . There will also be a number is parenthesis( ). I believe this number has to do with when the dogs first were registeded in the registration book. ( am very possibly wrong). A coat color of the dog will be listed as well. If the dog has been OFA'd , the it will say for example - OFA 36. This simply means that the dog was x-rayed at 36 months old ( hense the 36 stands for months of age at the x-ray)
Their physical address is American Kennel Club, 5580 Centerview Dr. Ste 200, Raleigh, N.C. 27606-3390.
The address for the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals is: Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, 2300 Nifong Blvd., Columbia, MO 65201-3856. Their phone number is (573) 442-0418 Fax is (573) 875-5073. Web site www.offa.org.
I hope that this answered your questions and will be of some help.

I too think that this person doesn't sound very honest. The breeder should have puppy shots and health certificates on each and every puppy as well as the parents!!!!

The breeder should provide you with the AKC registration application for the puppy and a four generation pedigree.
AKC Registration alone is not a guarantee of quality.
Here are some suggested questions one can use to determine if a breeder is truly responsible:

1. Is she an AKC registered breeder of good standing and an active member of her breed Parent Club?

2. Are there AKC Champions listed on the pedigree, showing that the breeder spends her time & money to prove the quality of her breeding stock through competition?

3. Are all the animals kept in clean, comfortable, healthy, loving circumstances?

4. Did the breeder conduct extensive interviews with you and every member of your family?

5. Have the sire & dam received all available health clearances, (eg. OFA Hip & Eye, Thyroid testing, THESE VARY FOR EACH BREED)

6. Is she willing to honestly discuss any possible genetic defects that may exist in her line?

7. Does she have a Sales Contract?

8. Does the contract contain a clause stipulating that you spay or neuter the puppy before it reaches a certain
age?

9. Does the contract contain a clause stating that if at any time in the puppy's life, you can no longer care for it, it must be returned to the breeder? (This ensures that no animal bred by this breeder will ever end up in a shelter).

10. Will the breeder maintain contact with you for the life of the puppy to answer questions and help in general?

When a litter is registered with a kennel club you get puppy papers, which are then sent in by you after the breeder fills them out and issues a sales agreement. Papers can and sometimes are faked but if the breeder is caught the kennel club can nullify the whole litter and even ban the breeder from registering any other littlers. You also need a health certificate from a vet and its nice to get a copy of the parents papers but they really don't offer anything other than the name and breed of the dog. They don't guarantee that the parents are healthy or that they are good specimens of the breed. That is totally up to the breeder. Ask for reference from previous litters if there are any and don't buy a puppy because you feel sorry for it. If they pups aren't healthy and friendly look else where.
Good luck and enjoy your new pup.

When a breeder has pups, they have to mail in an application for the litter, along with parents names and reg #'s, date the pups were whelped, and how many pups in the litter, then AKC sends them an application for each pup. You cannot register a pup with just a copy of the registration papers or a copy of the pedigree. Sounds like the breeder is scamming you about the papers.

Sorry, but the only way to get pedigree papers is if the sire and dam (parents of pup) both have papers and are already registered in the AKC so the breeder can register the litter your puppy is in to have papers.
