My daughter's 3rd birthday is coming up soon and I'm really excited to get her a "rolling coaster" bike. I saw a kid using it in the park...it looked like a blast. I spoke with his mom and she told me she has two, one for him and another for his older sister and they both LOVE them.

You know what's so funny? I have a two year old daughter and me and my husband have bought her TONS of the expensive toys. She will usually play with them some then tire of them after a few minutes. Then we take her to my grandmothers house and she will play with toys around her house for HOURS and then she even wants to take them home with her. These are old, plastic beat up toys that have probably been around since the 70's. Just simple little dolls that don't speak or wet their diapers or anything!! I think my grandma buys them at garage sales. What is the attraction?? I don't understand. However, she NEVER EVER gets tired of these toys she will carry them from room to room and play ALL day.
Anyways, my point is don't spend too much money. Obviously, the simpler the better. Good Luck! =)

Check out anything she enjoys on television, there are bound to be endless toys and things marketed with those characters. I bought my daughter a Dora blanket when she was three and now that she is five, she still loves the blanket. You just never know for sure what they will like best. Nail polish, lip gloss, and spray on 'perfume' for children remain huge hits. There is also a wonderful childs portable dvd player that she loved until it was worn out completely. I think it made her think she was really grown up and it was very reasonably priced at W'mart.

A barbie laptop. They are great learning toys as the kids grow, but at three they are lots of fun to push the buttons and listen to the sounds. The best part is my daughter and I sit down with our "laptops" and "work" together. She loves it.
Also, anything with her name on it. Have a bathrobe and towel set monogramed with her name. Get a wooden box from the craft store and stencil her name on it.

i bet this is not what you're thinking of but, I really think books are the best gifts. Kids can look at them and read them over and over for years and enjoy them so much more than a toy, that as you say, is over and done with quicker than the box it came in. Get a bunch of books --- ones you liked as a child, a classic, maybe one that goes along with a movie, one about something she particularly likes. she won't get bored and she will learn and enjoy!

I guess it would depend on your child's personality. My 3 yr old LOVES wooden puzzles, coloring books, finger paints, baby dolls with a stroller and a bottle, Barbies, lip gloss, nail polish, and dress up clothes.

Craft supplies. It depends on this that your daughter is interested in. My youngest daughter is always thrilled to bits about getting a new doll. She'll play with them for years.
My eldest daughter was always more into crafts and origami and stuff, so that is what we always got for her.
