I prefer Peninsula because it is not as crowded as Beal Point.
rancho Seco campground is usually pretty crowded, see smud.org below

I agree with Mel lake Alpine is a great place. To get there from Sacramento take 99 south exit highway 4 west. You can not miss it, it will be on your right side just after Bear Valley Ski resort. There is some good fishing and hiking and the campsites are nice on the east side of the lake. Worms and spinners work well here. The lake is nice and clear.
There is also Silver lake and a few others that are east on highway 88. If you prefer the hotter weather lake Comanche, pardee, and new Hogan are all nice places to camp and enjoy the water.

White Cloud Campground/Tahoe Nat'l Forest, 10 mi east of Nevada City on Hwy 20, 4,000 ft elevation, in a pine and cedar forest. Near So Fork Yuba River and Scotts Flat Reservoir.

There's a ton of campgrounds within two hours of Sacramento. I used to go to Big Bend up I-80 E.
AAA have campground maps that are pretty helpful.

Me and my mate had a similar problem getting a b&b in Skeg. a few years ago. So I wont go there again. Never had any problem anywhere else in the world.
