Boil water in it for about 5 min. to kill any bacteria still living there...just to be safe. Then pour the boiling water over the sponge to kill bacteria there too.

Well, I've done that and I am still alive. My rice cooker boils the water for several minutes while cooking, so I'd guess one would probably be ok even if one didn't wash the pot at all, but that would be gross. If you did wash it you should be fine. You could boil your sponge (or just replace it) if you are really worried about it, or , maybe, if you have very small children, but I wouldn't bother, because I'm not worried about it myself, and my kids (that's Bobby to the left) lick their own ..., well you know.

It's not likely. Just put a capful ofl bleach in about 8oz of hot water and swish it around with a sponge. Yes, your sponge is ok. Use it in the bleach/ water you use to disinfect the pot and rinse it out. If you're concerned buy a new one. They're not that expensive and why stress?
I know someone who lets mold grow after letting dishes sit for a week. She uses soap and hot water and they never get sick...but this is a gross habit. At least rinse your dishes or in the case of the rice pot, put hot soapy water in it, let it soak and clean it!

Just clean out your sponge by rinsing it out and you'll be fine. Or use a new sponge If you feel that worried about it.
I got teflon in blood stream before by accident and It wont kill you it just sticks around for a good while.

Soak the sponge in a little water and clorox--it will be fine.
The only time you worry about teflon coatings is when they start to spot, or peel off--then get a new one.
Good Luck on your finals!
keep up t he good grades!

i'd say toss the sponge. anytime you scratch a pot lined with something so things dont stick to it you risk ingesting it in your food, although there are types of spatulas and spoons made for mixing in pots, so you dont have that problem. that would be my only concern, not the rice.
