Eating horse meat is not uncivilized. It's not common here in the Netherlands but I eat it sometimes. After I started working at a history theme park where we had some oxen, and finding out how nice, gentle and well-trained cattle can be, I decided there was no good reason not to eat horse. I'd either eat both horse & beef or eat neither, and I like my meat too much for the last!

Many of the francophone countries eat horse meat, including France, Belgium, and Quebec. A lot of people enjoy a good bavette du cheval.
Be careful who you call "uncivilized." Some people consider eating beef and poultry uncivilized.

Hi, Ashley, Your question brought back a memory that made me laugh and cringe. Yes, they eat horse meat in France. But not everyone.
When I was in my 20s I had a job as an au pair in Paris, taking care of a 3-y.o. girl. It was part of my job to shop for the food that she would eat for lunch every day. Her mother told me to buy "viande hachee" one day which means "ground beef." It was a Monday, and the mum had forgotten, and I didn't realize, that all the butchers are closed on Monday. All except the horsemeat butchers, that is.
The sign said "biftek" so in I breezed and bought my 100 grams of biftek, s'il vous plait, merci boucoup. Cooked it like ground beef and the darling child ate every scrap of it. C'est du cheval, the mother exclaimed in horror, upon realizing later what had happened (That's horse!). Oh my.

The majority of countries around the world eat many types of meat. As long as they're not eating their young, any reasonable person should be cool with it.

Even canine and cats! yet I in basic terms think of that canine, cats, horses could be disregarded of the entire eating equation. You sort of grew to become my abdomen. Did you may ask the type of question in this website while there are various horse enthusiasts at here! dumb

People of many nationalities eat things we might consider odd, but the are not uncivilized.
a few examples:
Guinnea Pig - South America
Raw snake blood - China
Dog - China, Phillipines
Raw seal meat, eyes included - Inuit
and on it goes. These people are not uncivilized.

Please don't be so judgemental. Just because on a country eat horse meat does not make it uncivilised. You might think it is because you don't eat it in YOURS but every country have their own culture and values.
An Indian would fine eat beef abhorrant but they wouldn't consider your country "uncivilised". In the Peruvian Andes they eat guniea pigs - because that is SURVIVAL - they don't have the resources to graze cattle so they have to eat some other meat. So you see... it is "each one to his own"
In Australia, we can eat kangaroo, although it is NOT on everyday menu, but we can eat them. It is the world's only edible national emblem (oh - actually, we can eat emu as well- so I guess we have two edible national emblems) LOL
