Thanx to everyone that answered. It was something that I had heard and just wanted to know from people who really knew. I already know that I can get a discount at some stores with the ID and I did not say that the military was a welfare program. Maybe the one that said that should read my question again. thanx again

Nope / did get free mail when sending from a combat zone for letters.
Better question is to ask if a store offers a military discount with military ID?

As noted previously, you can send letters and regular mail for free if you are in a combat zone (with an APO/FPO address).

My favorite thing to do when I was in Desert Storm was to write "Free!" in the top left corner of all my outgoing mail....

while i was in iraq postage was free for out going mail, but that didn't include packages. those we had to pay for. as far as i know any serviceman stationed in a war zone like iraq or afghanistan can send letters for free.

No not unless you are stationed overseas and can use the MPS systym between posts (APO - FPO, APO -APO). You do still have to pay regular postage for mailings back to the States.
