It's really common! It is found in the dairy case right beside the cottage cheese. It's usually a little tiny bit more expensive, but I think it's worth it! It's got a bit drier texture, a bit more grainy and sweeter than cottage cheese. I often substitute back and forth between cottage cheese, except that I like Ricotta on its own and can't stand cottage cheese on its own.

If you are using it in a cheese cake, I wouldn't substitute. If it's for a lasagne, then go ahead.

Just about any major supermarket should have it. If not I use cottage cheese but put it in a strainer to drain off some moisture. About 15 min. will do. Also ricotta is a little more acidic,a teaspoon of white wine vinegar to two cups drained cottage cheese will make it very close.

You can buy Ricotta cheese at wal-mart supercenters or pretty much any grocery store, and from my experience small curd cottage cheese is a suitable substitute.

it is kind of an Italian section.marinara sauce and raviolis that sort of stuff.
i agree that you can substitute other stuff say cottage cheese in lasagna but i think it ruins it
I'm from a Sicilian family and prefer the real thing

Did you season it? You must mix it with Parm or Romano cheese, salt, fresh parsley( optional) and add one eggs and mix well.
