Because they think that all they have to do is believe, and that their actions don't matter.
Not a great recipe for ethics or integrity.

A big reason is that going to church makes them feel that they are different from others (true on some levels) and the only ones who are right, thus they feel superior. With all the answers and a superiority complex, of course they're unethical.
However, this only describes some, as I'm sure you're aware.

No one needs church, the people that are saved by God through Jesus Christ are the church. We call the church the building, and in that we make the assumption of church people. A play on words, people are people, whether they are in church or club. Unethical is everywhere, we just expect these people not to be. Those who claim Christ shouldn't be unethical, church don't make or break anything, but Christ does.

I think it's kind of like the way that kids who are spanked learn how to follow the specific rules set out to avoid punishment, but don't need learn the principles behind the rules so that they can use the principles to make their own decisions about right and wrong. They think, "As long as I'm not breaking any of the specific, punishable rules (or not being caught), I'm OK".
Religion's kind of the same. Follow the rules & you're saved. The rest doesn't matter.

"Why is it that most church going people end up being the most unethical. but they think they are good people?"
Self delusion can occur regardless of whether someone is a churchgoer or not.
"is it because of guilt that they go to church."
Thats not why I go.
"I think if they just lived their life with integrity they would not need to go to church."
Simply being a 'good person' by the worlds standards will not bring you close to God. You need to be a good person by God's standards.

a lot of people at church are just comphortable at church. they aren't growing in the church, they're just, comphortable. the scary thing is that the devil actually nourishes that thought "to just stay comphortable" this means that it's gotta be bad. thoes people just go to church and then live the life that they want that isn't of god, but it's.... comphortable.
do you get my point, or was it all just annoying? ah well, no matter. L8R (maybe).

I am not sure what people you are talking about but I go to Church to worship God in praise and song and to hear the message.
I support the Missionaries that risk their lives to clothe, build schools, homes, roads, educate and tell the good gospel news. We reach out to our community and each other.
I also like to fellowship with other believers. No one is forced to go to Church if they don't want to. I speak only for myself.

When you believe you can ask for forgiveness and be absolved of all wrong doing with a few "Hail Mary's" or other applicable rituals the need to take full responsibility for your actions is not there.. You have an out, you just ask your "god" for forgiveness and there is no need to worry about anything else..

Why do most car salemen lie to families about their need to buy an expensive car?
They're automobile hypocrites! I think if more carsales people would not go to car lots, we'd have less economic tragedy, don't you...do I sound stupid?

If we are really that bad you should be glad we go to church. Just think how evil we would be if we didn't go.
