The cat needs to associate your call with something pleasant - like food! Try it at home first and on short distances. Call him and when he comes, offer him a treat. Go longer and longer distances; but give him something pleasant everytime he does come to you (food, praise, a treat).
Good luck.

Because he is a cat and is probably wondering why you don't come to him when he calls you.
Usually when it is dinner time my cats will always come running but otherwise they come only when they want to. It's not cause they're lazy, unless they are old. My cats that are still young are always looking for trouble, bouncing off walls and climbing trees and chasing birds and whatever else they can find outside if they can get out.
Maybe your cat just happens to be busy doing one of those things when you call. Would you if you were in the middle of something, drop what you are doing if the cat called you? Of course not,
cats won't either.

Dogs come when they're called. Cats take a message, and will get back to you at their convenience.

We now have four cats in our house (thanks to the uncaring folks on our block who dumped their cats out on the street during the winter), and only one of them reliably comes when called. If you make any noise with the food bowls, though, it's a surefire way to have all four of them run to the kitchen.

Because cats aren't dogs, however my cat does come when she's called, but she must be a freak of nature or something. Most cats could care less if ur calling their name.

Cats are very independent and only come if they want to. I had a cat named Abby--she also knew what the word "eat" meant. I could call her name and she wouldn't come, but let me open a can of tuna and call out "do you want to eat" -- she would appear out of nowhere and be all over my feet!

Cat's are somewhat defiant creatures and will do everything, their way in their own time. Do not expect much.

But if you are having trouble calling your cat in from say, the backyard, try shaking a bag of treats. It's always worked for me. ;)

I've got one cat that comes when I call it - runs like a dog from wherever he is, I've got another that requires the constant saying of it's name, over and over and over ..

Depends on the cat!

Cats are very independent. My cat won't respond unless she thinks she will get something out of it.

My cats knows her name because when I call her she always responds but she usually doesn't come to me unless I hold out my hand beacause she thinks I have food.
