No. Physically placing ones hand on a Bible and swearing an oath is not required nor was it ever legally enforceable. The court gives those giving testimony the option of "swearing an oath" or making an affirmation to tell the truth as to the best of their knowledge.

If they choose to swear on the bible there is nothing to stop them.. That doesn't mean they believe it..

When going to court a person is not required to swear on the bible or any other book.. The famous "Do you swear to tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you god..." doesn't have to be sworn to either..

I went to court when the judge wanted me sworn in I said "I will not swear on a bible or make a pledge with so help me god in it."

He said "Ok what will you do?"

I just held my right hand up and said "I promise to tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth."

The judge smiled and said " Ok let the record show the witness has promised to tell the truth and let's proceed."

No pledge in a fictional deities name, no bible, completely legal..

Most courts have done away with swearing on a Bible, since there are so many who don't follow its teachings.

You can refuse to swear on the Bible. I did when I had to testify in court because I don't believe the holy book should be used in that manner or be involved in legal proceedings. Church and state should be seperate.

I went to testify as a witness and refused to swear on the bible and they held me in contempt. Are we oppressed and discriminated against?

I believe that they should not be allowed too. They do not honor the Bible and so, why would anyone believe them if they did swear on the Bible. Wouldn't that act be deceitful?

However, I do believe that many have sworn upon a Book that many hold dear, including myself!
