Most atheists deny the existence of God because there is no proof of God. Atheists are big on 'proof', and therefore claim science as their principal belief system. I believe that most atheists have a good understanding of the scientific method.
Science does a lot to 'prove' stuff, but it CANNOT disprove anything. That's the basis of science. As soon as information comes along to invalidate an old theory, you develop a new one. Inherent in the scientific method is the idea that no theory is permanent, new data can come along at anytime.
So, most spiritual folks will say that God won't prove him/her/itself as a test of faith. It is part of most spiritual belief systems to say that you cannot prove the existence of God. It is part of science to say that you cannot disprove anything. (Including God.) Logically, what you end up with, is that the existence of God cannot be proven or disproven. To believe or disbelieve requires faith. Atheism takes the same irrational leap of faith that religion does. Granted, atheism is essentially faith in nothing, but there is still faith. (It's worth noting that the more optimistic, humanist atheists I've met claim faith in humankind.)
All people with genuine faith have a sense of peace about them. A peacefulness that comes from having the big question answered. A faithful atheist is functionally very similar to a faithful Christian. They don't usually argue about what they have faith in, because they know that faith cannot be conveyed to someone unwilling to make that same 'irrational leap of faith'.
From what I can tell, most of the people in the R&S section are arguing over stupid stuff. (Seriously, evolution does not invalidate God, God does not invalidate evolution. Move on to a new topic!) These people arguing over petty differences don't have the faith that they claim to have, and that's why they argue.
That's not to say that everyone in R&S is lacking in faith, just most. Read the answers, there's really only a handful of people on either side that aren't just arguing. Heck, most of the questions look like they're intended to start arguments.
I think those on both sides that are lacking faith come here to argue for what they want to have faith in. The real mystery is what the faithful people are doing here.
P.S.
Can I get a 'Hell Yeah!' for the 'Hitchhiker's Guide' reference upthread?

As a born again christian I would surmise that perhaps the person was doing research to validate their arguments of atheism versus other religions.I have found many atheist argue points that they reference from second hand knowledge as oppossed to direct research,I respect their viewpoint and am glad I'm in America where such beliefs may be voiced without repercussions.

Someone asked once in Yahoo Answers what would I answer if a man with a gun aims at me and asks me wether I believed in Jesus. I answered I would answer what the man with the gun would want to hear so that the "nice" man doesn't KILL me. I was rated with a lot of thumbs down. Someone answer that he would say that he believed in Jesus so if he was killed he would go to heaven. He was given TEN POINTS for that. I am rated rather low for wanting to STAY ALIVE, and a fanatic was willing to GET KILLED because he would like to go to heaven.
I imagine most Christians asking questions in this section are of violent nature.

I've asked this same question to those who come and "stir things up" with anger and name calling with hatred.
Maybe some are searching honestly too. As one who loves God I sure wouldn't go to a atheist site.

How many times is someone going to ask this question. Being an atheist does not mean your not spirtual. Why do you spend so much time worrying about atheist. Oh yeah, that might answer your question too.

A true atheist wouldn't bother. These self-proclaimed atheists here, are looking for something. You see them blaming mortal mans sins on God? God gave man free will--since the only perfect man was Jesus--everyone else falls short of the grace of God--but God does not cause man to sin. These 'atheists' are here looking for answers--either to further prove to themselves God is not real or find some logical basis for their own morality--and without a devine source.....there is none.

What's the matter? Are you afraid? Is your faith is so weak that it cannot withstand debate?
If it were up to me, Mythology and Folklore, and Religion and Spirituality would be one section, not two.
