Ask your local health department about the incidence of rabies in cats in your area. If the kitten is still alive, it should be quaranteened and observed for 10 days. It it remains healthy during that time, your risks of contacting rabies are extremely small. If the animal is dead and available, it should be sent to the state lab for examination of the brain.
Assuming the animal is not available, your public health officials could advise you. Rabies shots are no longer as painful as previously, and consist of five shots on day 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28. A single shot of rabies immune globulin may also be recommended.
Incubation of rabies is usually 4 - 6 weeks from time of bite to development of symptoms. Bites on the face have a shorter incubation period. Rarely the incubation period may be a year or longer.
Rabies is almost always fatal once the symptoms are manifest. Check with your doctor promptly for advice.

Rabies infection in humans begins with vague symptoms such as fever, cough, or sore throat followed in several days by more serious and rapidly progressing symptoms such as restlessness, hallucinations, and seizures. The final stage is coma and death.
The incubation period—the time from exposure to the rabies virus until symptoms appear—is usually 4 to 6 weeks. In rare cases, the incubation period can last from several days to more than a year after exposure to the virus.
If you are concerned that you may have been exposed to the rabies virus, it is important to seek medical attention before symptoms develop. Rabies is nearly always fatal if not treated before the appearance of symptoms.
the rabies virus is found almost exclusively in wildlife. Bats, raccoons, skunks, foxes, and coyotes are the most common hosts of rabies
