I grew up in Sherwood, right next to Tualatin. TIgard and Tualatin are both good communities, but both are well past 20000 in population, in fact i think Tigard is closing in on 50000. If you're alright with a big city-type suburb, then Tigard is good. If you want a little smaller feel, go with Tualatin. If you want even smaller, but tighter communities, I'd go with Sherwood or Wilsonville. Both have about 15000 people.

Everything is pretty expensive out there, stay away from milwalkie, gladstone, and most of clackamas though, everything is pretty ugly there, at least I think so. Traffic is pretty nasty on the Westside (Tigard, Tualatin, ect) Personally I would look into NE Portland. Just make sure your kids go to a good highschool, if you live in Portland, like David Douglass, Lincoln, or Jefferson, Benson is ok. Not Parkrose though, that's my local highschool, they have a very nice new building, and their gym is MUCH nicer than that of Mt hood community college, but only 98 out of 300 and something seniors graduated this year... that's so bad I actually laughed when I heard that.

I'd try Tualatin for commuting since Tri-Met provides a fast, frequent express bus to downtown Portland from Tualatin route #96 Plus, there are more restaurants & shopping centers available in Tualatin. Good Luck!

They are both good areas - Tualatin is further out from Portland but not a horrible commute. They're also both more affordable than Portland as well.

Tigard is higher in crime and gang activity than any other city around Portland.
